Restoration of Blue Lake
Location: Redcar and Cleveland

Blue Lake is a small reservoir built for JW Pease in 1880 to supply water for hydraulic power at a nearby farm. The reservoir is located in the forest next to a footpath which follows the track of a derelict ironstone railway. The local history of the area is dominated by the Pease family, who were ironmasters and the progenitors of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. The group is aiming to raise awareness of the industrial heritage of the area. JW Pease was interested in exploiting hydraulic power, in much the same way as Lord Armstrong of Cragside, and the Pease family were at the cutting edge of Victorian technology.

The project will involve cleaning out the lake and repairing the spillway. An interpretation board at the site of the lake, together with leaflets and an exhibition, will explain about the history and heritage of the lake. The project has already amassed a number of volunteers, and further community involvement will be achieved through local schools and the nearby Redcar & Cleveland Woodland visitor centre.
