South Tyneside Coastal Survey
Location: South Tyneside

The South Tyneside Coastal Survey has been carried out by the Arbeia Society.

Originally planned to concentrate on the area of Cleadon and Bolden (South Tyneside), the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease meant that the survey was shifted to the 4 mile length of coastline between South Shields and Whitburn.

Led and co-ordinated by Dr Clive Hart of Tyne and Wear Museums, around 25 volunteers scrutinised this evocative stretch of the coast for information that could then be added to the Historic Environment Record for South Tyneside.

Highlighted findings include a possible mesolithic (8,000-5,000 B.C.) midden and /or occupation site at Potter's Hole. The team recorded flints and evidence for burning. This site is threatened by coastal erosion.

An additional highlight was the recording of a late-Saxon decorated sarcophagus slab built into the fabric of St.Andrew's church at Whitburn.

They found evidence for activity throughout the Roman period. In particular, a study of the incidence of finds found washed up on the Herd Sand beach, suggests that they may originate from the wreck of a Roman ship (2nd century AD) , which came to grief when entering the mouth of the Tyne.
