The Traditional Woodworking Skills in South Tyneside
Location: South Tyneside

Traditional woodworking skills have been a part of the region’s heritage for thousands of years from The Romans and Bede, to the miners and shipwrights on the Tyne. This project is engaging the young, particularly those excluded from mainstream education and helping them research and learn these traditional skills. They have looked at how the trade developed and where traditional woodworking skills were used. The young participants have been working with equipment overseen by woodworking experts and a facilitator who has been guiding the research and assisting with the training of these skills.

Among the many diverse activities of this project has been the links they have forged with the North Pennine Heritage Trust where the group have been given a demonstration in pole lathing techniques, which they intend to reproduce at the workshop. The participants have reproduced some roman furniture which is to be displayed in the local Roman Fort at Arbeia.

An unexpected outcome has been the interest this project has generated locally, with the council commissioning an oak Time Chest, which contains documents that will remain sealed for 100 years. Interest has also generated donations of recycled timber and unusual seasoned timber, which will be used to demonstrate traditional wood skills to other groups. Many of the young participants have shown interest in continuing their development of these newly learnt traditional skills once they leave school.

The group has attended Chopwell Wood Forest Festival where they also displayed their products. It is the intention to display their research and products at the summer festivals of South Tyneside Hebburn Festival; the South Tyneside Flower show and the Catherine Cookson festival. They also intend to provide a small presentation at Nent Head Mines.
