Unlocking the memories
Location: South Tyneside

Unlocking the memories of our older residents, the Words from the Wise project is giving a voice to older people in Jarrow and Hebburn.

Gathering the Words From The Wise is the most important part of the project. When the music hall show is presented at a venue, it is with the promise that we will be back a week later when the audience members become the stars of the show! Harry and Helen © Arts Advance

The next week sees a short reprise of the show and then a request for people to join the hosts Harry Herring and Helen Russel in the spotlight to tell their own stories. South Tynesiders are not shy and everyone has been keen to join in the spirit of the day.

The range of stories being gathered is remarkable, the second world war dominates most peoples memories in this age group. Another common theme is going away to work in service, usually at age 14.

Interview with Kittie © The Countryside AgencyAn interesting account of early working life was eloquently related by Kitty Ramshaw, a resident of the Windsor Nursing Home in Hebburn, who sadly died recently, aged 105. Kitty described how she barrowed bricks at the Barium Works in East Jarrow.

A specially printed reminiscence record booklet has allowed other people to participate in Words From The Wise. Leaflets distributed in Jarrow and Hebburn libraries have led to many requests to record memories in written form.

Come on follow the jarra lads! © Arts AdvanceMuriel Costelloe was born in 1907, her fascinating booklet begins " Yes I remember zeppelins..." Muriel goes on to describe a raid on the Tyneside shipyards.

Arts Advance is now gathering a substantial archive of living memory all recorded for the project on video, audio and written formats.
