Wise words all round!
Location: South Tyneside
December 2002
‘Words from the Wise’ is capturing living memories of everyday life in the riverside towns of Hebburn and Jarrow from the 1930’s on
Material is being gathered by holding music hall-style shows for older audiences, which puts them in the mood to reminisce about their own life stories. The actors involved include veterans Harry Herring and Helen Russell who are well known faces locally and for their many appearances in TV dramas like When the Boat Comes In, Our friends in the North, Spender and Supergran.
The shows feature songs from Gracie Fields, Flannigan and Allen and many others along with a liberal sprinkling of light-hearted jokes and routines. Among the enthusiastic contributors at the Jarrow Happy Circle Club recently was 104 years old Kitty, who eloquently described her experiences of working life at the local Barium works in east Jarrow.
In 2003, Arts Advance plans a series of artists, writers and drama workshops for younger people to give them the opportunity to work with the material gathered, and help to illustrate and compile a booklet and dramatised audiotape which will preserve the information.
