A Photographic Census Of Southwick
Location: Sunderland

Until 1928, southwick was a township in its own right. Southwick History And Preservation Society (shaps) wish to research a record of Southwick as it stands today, as much of the housing stock is about to be demolished and replaced with newer dwellings. The old school buildings are about to be demolished, and there is an urgent need to interpret a photographic and video record of Southwick, so that existing and future residents can appreciate the heritage of the area. Work will concentrate on areas that are scheduled for immediate demolition, followed by other buildings and landmarks of significant interest.

Technical Equipment will allow images to be documented. Local schools will be involved, whilst an oral history project with training will record reminisces from the older members of the community. Project research will be recorded on a dvd show to be used in schools and community rooms, and booklets, postcards, and cards will be distributed for free. Talks with display will be given at schools and residential homes

As well as teaching children about their local heritage, we have been seeking their views on the southwick of today. We are particularly interested in their thoughts about the demolition of many of the houses in the district and how they feel affected..
