What we achieved
Location: Sunderland
A prime part of the project was to capture, on digital camera, photographs of every street in Southwick. Consequently, between the years 2004 and 2006, we have taken photographs of every street in the area served by the old Southwick Urban District Council. In this part of the project we have taken over 1,200 photographs, many of which reflect the ongoing changes at High Southwick and Marleys Pots, where many houses are being demolished. We have copied those photographs onto a DVD and we believe they will become and important historical archive of Southwick.
Another significant part of the project was to convert some old 8 millimetre cine film, taken around Southwick in the 1960's by the Scrafton family, and this has been copied onto a DVD, with commentary added by volunteers. It includes scenes of many buildings in Southwick which have long since gone. Again, we consider that this film provides an important historical archive of Southwick life.
The third major part of the project involved making oral recordings from volunteers, about their memories of being raised, or working in the many industries in SOuthwick. Some 18 interviews were conducted and recorded.
As well as making historical records using electronic media, we have also published a 28 page booklet which covers the modern history of Southwick. The various chapters have been written by volunteers and it includes photographs taken during the project, as well as others provided by Southwick folk.
