Gardening Now And Then
Location: Sunderland
This project is working with volunteers and those with disabilities to provide the local community with the opportunity to learn about and engage with our gardening heritage from the Victorian era. There is a training programme and practical growing sessions, using traditional methods and implements which combined with story telling, show how gardening implements and techniques have evolved.
This is an area which has some of the poorest health indicators in the UK and research by community Dieticians has shown that many young people and some adults have no concept of how food is grown. This issue has developed dramatically over the last century. It is an important constituent of this project to cover reasons for growing specific plants, their medicinal and nutritional properties, enriching people’s lives as they learn how food production and storage has changed the meals on our plates. It is intended to work in tandem with parents and pupils of local schools with the assistance of local historians and gardeners to research gardening history, produce an education pack, information and stories. Local people are to draw up a brief for local artists, in order for them to recreate traditional gardening implements. All visitors and volunteers can use the gardening techniques they learn from this project in their own gardens.
The beds have been dug and planted with an array of plants, using traditional Victorian methods of display and cultivation. There is one bed that has been retained to demonstrate techniques of planting and to allow hands-on experience during demonstration. The green house is well under construction and will soon be able to provide an abundance of plants, flowers and fruits traditional to the Victorian era, that are not suitable to be grown in our climate.
