Update April 2004
Location: Sunderland
We have formed a small steering group to investigate regeneration possibilities fo Hylton Castle and Chapel, chaired by Graham Bell from Northeast Civic Trust with senior personnel from English Heritage, Sunderland County Council and the Friends group.
We hosted a visit of approximately fifty American Hylton decedents to Hylton Castle on the 4th July 2004. The Sunderland City Council provided a buffet lunch at the Billy Hardy Complex.
Following a request by the Friends group, English Heritage has erected a flagpole on the castle.
We have recently received several thousand pounds from Sunderland City Council to have a complete survey done of the Hylton Dene. This will allow us to seek funding to extend the play park and carry out some landscaping developments where required.
As part of these developments we hope to be able to bring some 'Roman stones' into the Dene. It is believed that the stones, currently being used as break water at Roker Beach, were once part of a Roman Dam in the River Wear, between North and South Hylton. Bringing the ROman stones to the Dene would save them from further damage from wave erosion and bring them closer to their original site.
Dr Chris Stone of Sunderland University has had six of this tourism students exploring the tourism potential for Hylton Castle.
