Sunderland, The Story of a Seaport
Location: Sunderland

This project will involve the local community in a series of activities aimed at researching, recording, celebrating and sharing the historical past of Sunderland as a seaport.

Using the old Parish Church as a focal point the group will carry out a series of public consultations by meetings and questionnaires with the local community.

The resulting information will inform the development of four independent heritage trails throughout the old town. Routes will incorporate principal buildings, aspects of industrial heritage, a local characters trail and a ghost trail for younger members of the community. Blue plaques will be installed at appropriate locations. Self guided walk leaflets and maps will be produced and a programme of guided walks will also be arranged.

An oral history project, capturing the reminiscences of the older community will be reproduced in a booklet and incorporated into a mobile exhibition. Four hands-on workshops designed to bring to life the traditional industries of the area, eg rope making, proggy mat, brick and pottery making will be delivered.
