History Comes to Life
Location: Bolton
The aim of the project is to research & celebrate the heritage of Smithills Hall by involving the local community in researching the history of the Hall & its inhabitants, producing a play from the results of the research & performing it on 6 occasions. An exhibition will be held & a programme produced again drawing on the results of the research. A video & photographic record will be produced & a series of workshops held for local children, exploring life during the most important periods of Smithills Hall's history.
The project is now half way through its development. Already the Hall has celebrated Medieval, Tudor and Victorian weekends with guides in costume and activities for children. Workshops have introduced children to different crafts.
The costumes have been made by the now well established sewing group which meets every Wednesday. This group is likely to be involved in the costuming of the dramatic presentation of the of the history of the Hall which will take place in March 2004.
The extensive research which has been carried out into the lives of people at Smithills in the past has now been written into a play. Auditions and rehearsals are about to take place. A video group has also been working on a production which reflets past and present life at the Hall.
Co-ordination of the various tasks has been made easier due to the enthusiasm of those working on it. The project will be completed at the end of March with an exhibition and recording of the whole project.
