Blacon Nature Park
Location: Cheshire

The project aims to restore and regenerate Blacon Nature Park and empower local groups and residents to manage and maintain it in the future.

Meetings will be held with local groups to discuss the park and it’s regeneration. This will identify the aspects of the park that are important to local people and will enable the group to draw up a programme of specific work. The group are involving Chester City Council Countryside Services, and together are drawing up plans for redevelopment work.

The group aims to conserve and manage the natural heritage that still exists, and to carry out a scheme of replanting and other activities to restore the land to its original state, including cleaning out and restoring the pond area with new planting, provide access points for people and appropriate safety measures, lay hedges and coppicing. A botanical survey of the area will take place as well as continued botanical monitoring to be carried out by the local community.

The first survey will be carried out prior to planting and other reinstatement, to give the group a starting point on which they can assess the progress and success of the project. The group will hold training and skills based workshops to enable local people to maintain the park and tools and equipment will be purchased and kept within the community. Interpretation of the park will be provided through local signs, park maps and other information for both blind and sighted people including audio maps and guides. Improved access for wheelchair users and other disabled people will also be created. The group will encourage study and ongoing creative involvement in the park including nature studies, pond dipping and record keeping of wildlife and plants.

The group will produce a record of the project in printed and recorded format that will be distributed around the community and held at local libraries. The group aims to encourage traditional usage of coppiced materials and other usable by-products by local schools (this could include links with traditional craftspeople making hurdles and similar items for use in the park). Finally, the group will hold a special awareness/open weekend to publicise the finished work and raise the park’s profile, therefore encouraging future sustained use.
