This project has been investigating and elucidating the complex multi-period archaeological site at Heronbridge. Many aspects of site have yet to be explored and explained - including its relationship with the surrounding landscape through time. The project has been using a multi-disciplinary approach including an earthwork survey, recording of field systems and other features of the historic landscape.
The project also undertook a geophysical survey, documentary research, paleoenvironmental sampling, study of aerial photographs and some excavation. The work was supervised by professionals but carried out largely by non-professional volunteers from both the Society membership and the communities of Handbridge and Eccleston.
The Society has a strong connection with the site, having discovered a Roman settlement there in 1929. It organised subsequent small-scale investigations with the results published in its Journal.
The aims of the project are to:
improve overall understanding of the site; disseminate the results through a range of media; contribute to better local and public understanding and appreciation of the site; enable local people to acquire experience and skills in heritage investigation, protection, interpretation and preservation. For more information about the work done by this project please visit their website at the Chester Archaeological Society
