The project aims to stimulate local interest in the Chester Canal with a view to developing an archived history. In conjunction with work on the Canal, further historical research will be carried out on one of the last working vessels - narrow boat "Towy". The project is one of several interrelated ones aiming to foster an awareness of the Canal.
The Canal was a key artery of trade with a unique combination of waterways features e.g. staircase locks, iron lock and mission room. The Canal's heritage and its importance in the transport network of the North West of England tell a uniquely fascinating story which, it is hoped, will enthuse both young and old.
The starting point of the project will be the voyage along the old working route of the narrow boat "Towy". It will be a 'listening' boat with four reminiscence events held. Research will then take place which will be archived, resulting in exhibitions of the material collated and the publication of a book.
A video, CD-ROM and teaching packs for both primary and secondary school use will also be produced.
