The Roman Middlewich Archaeology Project
Location: Cheshire

The project will build upon previous community projects, funded by HLF, under the umbrella of the Roman Middlewich Project. It will provide an opportunity for local people to be involved in a limited live archaeological excavation. Professional archaeologists will lead the project, training volunteers to carry out a ‘community dig’ on the sole undeveloped plot of land called Buckley’s Field, which is adjacent to the Roman Road ‘King Street’.

The work will involve;
  • training for volunteers in the methodology of archaeology
  • a geophysical survey
  • an assessment of stratigraphy and trial trenching
  • producing post-excavation results
  • an artefact and ecofact processing assessment
  • a technical report to be lodged with the County Archives
  • collection of web site material
  • production of an accessible booklet for local people
  • an active educational programme for local schools, aimed at KS2 & 3 aligned to the curriculum for ‘Romans in History’
  • a series of lectures and talks
  • development of additional interpretation boards for the site.
