Thomas Brassey Tribute Stones
Location: Cheshire

The group wishes to relocate four sandstone engraved pillars which were erected in 1845 to celebrate the fortieth birthday of Thomas Brassey, a locally born railway builder, who was to become one of the world’s greatest railway builders.

The pillars surround an oak tree which has grown and now threatens their future safety. They are in very poor condition and are sited in a field where no one can see them.

The 7th November 2005 was the 200th anniversary of Brassey’s birth, so to mark this occasion, the group propose to restore the stones and relocate them so that the public at large will see them. A qualified Stone Mason will assist, to ensure that the work is done correctly and he will also be involved in the provision of a restoration workshop for the local community. Leaflets will be produced on the life and times of Thomas Brassey and an Interpretation Board will be erected at the site to inform people of the history of the stones and the significance of Thomas Brassey. Interpretive material will incorporate a Braille version. An exhibition and open day will further raise awareness and inform local people of the success of the project.
