Cast Iron Lighthouse Restoration
Location: Cumbria

The group wishes to restore and preserve the old lighthouse which stands on Haverigg sea wall or outer barrier. The lighthouse was built in 1900 when the Hodbarrow Mining Company needed to extend the mine workings further seaward. The lighthouse is built from cast iron sections and is probably unique, and has deteriorated since the roof became breached.

Several years ago Haverigg Primary School adopted the lighthouse as their school logo and they have lighthouse awards which are presented to the children for various achievements. The children and Local History Society will research a leaflet and interpretation boards, and place information onto local web sites.

Local volunteers will clear and landscape the site. The project is being driven by the staff, Governors and children of the school as the lighthouse and sea wall are the only physical reminders of the industry which shaped their community.

The group feel it is important to preserve this feature and at the same time ensure its significance is not lost to future generations.
