Sport
Location: Cumbria
The school has encouraged children in their sporting development through a range of extra curricular opportunities.
The most frequent extra curricular sports have been the traditional football and netball, but over the years children have sometimes had opportunities to get involved in rugby, cross country, orienteering, short tennis, swimming, chess and others. Success has been variable, but as each year group moves through the school, different opportunities are presented.
The first sports day was in 1969. At that time the school did not have its own school field, just playgrounds and some grassed areas. Permission was given to use a field below Sunny Bank which existed before the Fairybead housing development was built on it. Mr Dredge mowed the grass and marked out the running track lanes in a field just down the road from the school, as this was the nearest suitable field which could be used for school sports day.
A large school field was added when the building was extended in 1973-4 on land previously owned by Mr Hugh Thompson, but it was not until 1976 that a sports day was held on this field after a few years without a sports day being held. The field had a number of drainage problems which required attention before it could be put to good use.As the school had its own swimming pool for many years, there was an obvious commitment to swimming competitions. This included some outstanding achievements, such as winning the Thompson Memorial Shield in 1989 and 1991.
Although not requiring a great deal of physical activity, chess has been a keen favourite sport in the school for many years. This included children participating in their own matches in school, a Stainton C E Primary School Chess tournament and also a local school chess tournament, which opened up opportunities to play at County level. Plumpton School has hosted the local schools chess tournament for many years. In April 1994, the school team won the tournament. This success was added to one year later when Stainton C E Primary School retained the chess championship title.
The football team of 1995 was a particularly successful team. In April they won the Skelton Seven’s football tournament. In May they won the police five-a-side competition, beating Clifton School 1-0 in the final, and were so successful they never conceded a single goal! In March 1998, the football team won the Ullswater five-a-side competition, despite playing against a substantial number of larger schools. In the final, they beat Great Salkeld School 2-1. The same team were runners-up in the police five-a-side in June 1998.
The netball coaching skills of Mrs James and Mrs Dudson have contributed a great deal to the success of the netball team over recent years. The netball team were joint winners of the Skelton Seven’s tournament in 1997. The netball team in 1999 were very successful. After being joint winners of the Skelton Seven’s tournament, the team went on to win the Eden Netball Festival at Ullswater Community College. After several hard fought victories, the team played Penruddock School in the final and won 6-1. Laura Ruddick won the highest goal award after scoring a total of 14 nets. A netball was presented to the school team by Eden Ostrich World. For some years, Stainton School hosted its own netball competition, organised by Mrs James and Mrs Dudson. The netball team also won this competition in July 1999.
