Mr Butcher took up the role of Headmaster of Stainton village school in September 1964, for its final term, before overseeing the transition from three schools into one and taking up the role of Headmaster of the new school when it opened in January 1965.

The school had two other teachers when the new school opened. Miss S. I. Richardson had previously taught at Dacre School as Headmistress for 27 years, and Mrs Little had previously taught at Stainton School for ten years. This provided good continuity for the children as they began their new school.

School dinners were cooked on the premises for the first time in January 1965 when the new school opened. Mrs E. M. McCulloch was the Cook-in-Charge, assisted by her Kitchen Helps Mrs B Whitehead and Mrs D Griffiths.

Mr John Butcher: September 1964 – July 1968

Mr Butcher had the exciting and challenging task of setting up the new Stainton School. This included the transition from the three smaller village schools at the end of December 1964, with the movement of many school resources into the new school. It also included creating the ethos and working environment in the new school with a new staff team. The closing of the three village schools was not popular with everyone, so a key role for Mr Butcher was to create unity in the new school. However, in January 1965 he writes, “The moulding of the three schools into one has been far easier than first expected. There has been no acrimony”. Mr Butcher was soon to leave Stainton School. In July 1968, after four years as Headteacher at Stainton (including one term in the old school), he moved from the area to become Headteacher at a school in Walthamstowe. His last entry in the school log book reads: “This is the last entry of my association with Stainton School. I have spent four very pleasant years here, due mainly to the two very capable members of staff Miss Richardson and Mrs Little. I also thank the Kitchen Staff and Caretaker for their diligence.”

Mr Geoff Dredge: September 1968 – March 1978

Mr Geoff Dredge was appointed as the new Headteacher, starting in September 1968. Mr Dredge was responsible for many early developments in the school. Perhaps he will be most remembered for his enthusiasm for the swimming pool development and determination to ensure that the funds were raised in order to see this project through to completion. His commitment to ensuring the school building catered for the needs of the children was also evident, as the number on roll increased gradually from 85 to 125, and was rewarded in 1974 with major redevelopment in the school: two additional teaching areas, with stores and wet areas; extensions to the cloakrooms and toilets; a new Headmasters room; modernisation and extension of the kitchen. His only frustration was that funding did not extend to two full sized classrooms and an extension for the hall – a frustration still shared today!

Mrs Elizabeth Lowis: April 1978 – July 1978

Mrs Lowis, Deputy Head at that time in the school, was Acting Head for one term until new Headteacher appointed.

Mr Ian Graham: September 1978 – December 2000

Mr Graham moved from Long Marton School, Cumbria where he was Deputy Head. He began his long association with Stainton School very positively, concluding his first term with these words: “As this is my first term as Headmaster of Stainton C E School I am delighted with the response and the atmosphere we are building up in the school and the community.” Also, “Next term I intend to concentrate on the curriculum and provide teachers with a structure and a continuity throughout the school.” Perhaps the pinnacle of his career at the school was marked in 1999 when the governors nominated him for the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in the Lloyds TSB Annual Teaching Awards, which he successfully won. A further special event followed in December 2000, when Mr Graham finally retired from his role after an extended period of illness. At an evening celebration, attended by many former staff, parents and pupils, Mr Graham was presented with a ‘This Is Your Life’ summary of his achievements throughout the school over twenty-two years.

Mrs Helen Dunham: September 2000 – July 2001

Acting Head for one year until new Headteacher appointed.

Mr Peter Shelton: September 2001 – present

Mr Shelton moved to Stainton School from Yattendon C. E. Primary School in West Berkshire where he was previously Headteacher of a small village primary school for five years. During Mr Shelton’s time at the school, the number on roll has continued to grow gradually, and the move was made to add a fourth junior class in 2003 providing separate year group classes throughout the school. The Nursery has been built and the Foundation Stage curriculum introduced. The remodelling of the school has required a reshaping of the curriculum. A School Council was established in the school in 2003 and is beginning to play a significant role in the life of the school. The school has continued through a period of steady growth, and is again full to capacity. After a long review of the current and future building needs, the school launched its ‘Why settle for less?’ campaign in 2003 with a whole school development plan for the twenty-first century. So far the campaign has achieved modernisation of the toilet facilities, but the plans go well beyond this! This campaign is ongoing, and the school continues to actively seek funding and support for the extension and development plans.
