'Coniston Old Man' Slate Heritage Project
Location: Cumbria

Slate mining and quarrying has taken place on Coniston Old Man since shortly after the Norman Conquest. By 1950, it is estimated that over 80% of the population of Coniston was connected to the industry.

Memories of these times are still quite vivid amongst the community, with a limited amount of slate working still taking place on the Fell, but the old customs, traditions and stories are steadily dying out and the link between the village and the Fell has never been researched or recorded.

The group intends to research the lives of the quarrymen and create an oral history and photographic archive. Information leaflets and display boards will be produced as well as a web site covering the project. Local children will be involved in the research and will assist with the interviewing of older residents. Volunteers will research and record the artifacts of the industry that remain on the Fell and these findings will be a useful aid for industrial archaeological reference.
