Ambleside Oral History Archive Exhibition

Ambleside Oral Archive’s widening access policy has resulted in a major exhibition at the Armitt Museum and Library in Ambleside. This exhibition was opened during a special viewing for members of the local community by Dr Elizabeth Roberts of Lancaster University on 14 October 2004. The exhibition draws on the twenty eight years of experience of the group to explain how oral history takes place and to consider its value in the twenty first century, and provides visitors with an opportunity to discover for themselves some of the many aspects of the history of Ambleside gleaned from over 300 interviews. Short extracts from the archive can be listened to at the same time as visitors can examine artifacts and photographs from both the Armitt collection and from loans of local people.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is an installation by Ambleside artists Pam Williamson. A bowl has been placed within the work of art for visitors to contribute their memories. These will be displayed within the exhibition as it continues over the winter.

The exhibition continues to February 4th, 2005.
