The Journey

The Group wanted to have the book printed in Cumbria and we were fortunate that Titus Wilson of Kendal was willing to take on the work. In this photographs our joint editor is discussing proofs with members of Titus Wilson’s staff. © Project
Many items discovered during the project gave an insight into aspects of the heritage of the parish that have long since disappeared. This beautiful sampler refers to Haile School and is dated 1863. The existing Haile School building, now used as the village hall, was built in 1879, so the sampler showed that there had been an earlier school in the village. © Project
This early photograph shows the Buck’s Head Inn and the adjacent smithy. The building has now been converted into a private house and considerably altered, so the photograph, which is reproduced in the book, records a part of the lost heritage of the parish. © Project

Haile and Wilton Local Heritage Project
Location: Cumbria

When a group of villagers with an interest in their local history meets to discuss the formation of a local heritage group with the possibility of producing a book, there is envitiably much interest and excitement. One such group met in Haile village hall on 10th September 2002. Little did they know the journey that they were about to embark on.

Twenty four undaunted explorers began with a ten week course on the sources of local history, without the encouragement of which this journey may never have begun. We knew where, roughly, we wanted to go but we only had a vague idea how to get there.

So putting together the book has been an expedition entered into without a clear map. Looking back at the whole process we do wonder whether, had we had the map, we would have set off in the first place. But, it is said, the more difficult the journey the more worthwhile the destination.

A visitor may need a genuine map to find where the communities of Haile and Wilton are. For it is these two communities which, though some distance from each other, go to make up the larger part of the parish whose peoples, traditions and histories are the subject of this project.

We could just say, just leave the A595 at Egremont and turn one way or t'other, if you want to find us. But there is rather more picturesque and better reflects the way most of us feel about the place to say that we nestle between the foothills of the lake district - on the quiet side - and the gentle plains that move the eye towards the Irish Sea. We have the best of two worlds.
