This project is researching the heritage and customs of Hound Trailing, a traditional West Cumbrian leisure activity.
Hound Trailing involves racing the hounds across country, whilst following an aniseed trail over the high Lakeland fells. It ends with a sprint across fields as the dogs race back towards a line of owners banging laden food dishes. It is a traditional spectacle at agricultural shows in this area and is not a blood sport.
Six unemployed youths, under the guidance of a youth worker, and working with project members, are producing two videos and brochures to distribute to local groups. They are also mounting an exhibition to promote and raise awareness of this declining local sport.
The six are, with the Hound Trailing Association, visiting local schools to demonstrate their work and answer questions. This is to encourage more local youngsters to develop an interest in their sporting heritage.
