Lower Eskdale - Researching The Historic Landscape "In the Footsteps of Mary Fair"
Location: Cumbria
The group wishes to develop a programme of study and investigation of Muncaster Fell, building on archaeological work by a local lady in the 1920’s. They will study archive material and undertake a programme of fieldwork using modern techniques of archaeological investigation including fieldwalking and geophysical survey.
The area to be surveyed includes an iron ore bloomery site, the remains of an old farm and ruined tenements, an old track-way and a possible tumulus or barrow.
Another element of the project includes conservation work on the Roman Tile Kilns which are a scheduled ancient monument and are to be found on the private road from Muncaster Castle to Muncaster Head.
As part of the project, local people will be encouraged to take part in the work, under supervision of expert archaeologists. A study day will take place to present the techniques and results of the project to a wider audience, as well as an exhibition and presentations of the results.
As a result of the findings, a booklet and leaflet will be produced which will be distributed to the local community. For wider distribution an academic article will be published, a formal project archive prepared, and project reports placed in libraries.
