Kirkby Stephen Charter Fair
Location: Cumbria
This project has received further funding and aims to celebrate and raise the profile of the Kirkby Stephen Town Charter, reaffirmed in 1605 by James I, through involvement of the residents of all ages. They will work together in the management, planning, research and delivery of a three day programme of historically authentic episodes.
Underpinning the event will be detailed research into the customs and traditions surrounding the St. Luke’s Fair of 1605. Where possible, Manorial, Ecclesiastical, estate records, wills, inventories and court rolls will be used to identify and explain specific features of the Fair customs, with additional detail derived from secondary sources.
Project outputs will include interpretation boards, a ‘newspaper’, programme and an interpretative leaflet.
Original researched incidents from the period and fair will be used to produce playlets in the manner of the pied poudre court.
