The Story So Far
Location: Cumbria
The people of Kirkby Stephen wanted to raise the profile of the Kirkby Stephen Carter.
The idea for a Charter Fair stemmed from a desire by the Town Council to raise the profile of the granting of the Charter to the town in the 14th century. We wanted the ceremony of the reading of the Charter proclamation to become a community inclusive event, involving the entire town.
Having heard of the LHI, the Community Office sought information from the website and contacted the LHI advisor. Consultation with people in the town determined the composition of the Committee - members of Upper Eden History Society, an accountant, people with varied expertise, organisational skills, backgrounds and experiences.
