Maryport Memories
Location: Cumbria

Groups of young and old will explore themes of local heritage through discussions, recorded interviews, video and photography. There are rich memories of the ‘Great Depression’ and events of that period, as well as life in the past, which are in danger of being lost and young people in the area do not know the history of how the town declined from being a major maritime port. Young people from a range of groups will be encouraged to work with older residents to explore their past.

Workshops will take place to train the volunteers in interviewing and photography techniques. The material collated will be developed into an exhibition to be held at Maryport Maritime Museum and then taken on a ‘road show’ to local schools and special interest groups in the area. A booklet will be produced, and made available to local people at the exhibition and information placed on the Catholic Caring Services and LHI web sites.

It is intended that the project will enable both young and old to have a greater understanding and appreciation of their heritage.
