Maryport's strong maritime tradition extends back 2000 years. This project is developing and producing 'The Songs of the Sea' festival. The event will help the maritime traditions become more accessible and better valued, through encouragement of local participation.
At the festival, fishermen will hold a trawler race and give workshops to pass on traditional seafaring skills. The project is also working on developing workshops that will teach traditional clog dancing, Songs of Cumberland, and Sea Shanty Songs.
Finally at the festival, there will be performances and storytelling outside and in local pubs at night. This should help to ensure that new audiences are reached - including local people who would not normally participate in a festival.
