Millom - Knights and Needles
Location: Cumbria

The project aims to train and develop a group of local volunteer guides as well as producing high-quality interpretive material that explore the church and its artefacts, relate church to castle, explore the wider medieval context and make accessible this key aspect of Millom’s pre-industrial heritage.

The group will investigate the history of the medieval settlement of Millom, Millom Castle and Millom Old Church. Interpretation boards will be produced and sited at the church/castle boundary to maximise understanding of the castle and its significance. A printed church guide will also be produced to describe and explain the building in its various stages of history, its relationship with the castle, the town and its artefacts. A trail, specifically aimed at schools will be developed and focus on the figure ‘Terrible Dick’ believed to be a member of the family who occupied the castle for several centuries.

A recently discovered 1923 textile containing embroidered signatures of local people will also be studied and then exhibited at the end of the project. An oral history exercise will be conducted by the local history society, primarily focused on the local people involved in the production of the textile artefact
