Restoration of Georgian Steps and Garden project
Location: Cumbria

To research the history of, restore and re-open to the public, the last remaining flight of Georgian steps in Kendal; once a major thoroughfare, and replace them in their original Georgian garden setting. The stonework will be re-dressed, retaining as much of the original as is compatible with Health and Safety, and safety railings will be installed. Demonstrations of stonemasonry, metalwork and walling will be given to raise awareness of these skills.

Volunteers will research and restore the surrounding Georgian garden and undertake clearance of vegetation from the walls. An education pack will be developed to encourage local school involvement . The local Photography Society will produce an exhibition about the project, lectures will be given by local experts, and an interpretation board will be produced about the steps and their historic importance. The group is also applying for an NBS Award to cover the cost of laying stone paving on the top terrace at the head of the steps, to enable the area to be used for outdoor performances. The terrace is a stunning vantage point, which was much used by local people in the past before the steps became too unsafe to use.
