St. Catherine's Landscape Survey
Location: Cumbria
St Catherine’s is a small estate on the outskirts of Windermere. The group wished to undertake a full archaeological survey of the site, with local volunteers working in conjunction with specialist archaeological surveyors from Oxford Archaeology North. This will offer the volunteers the opportunity to have a direct involvement in researching their local area and learning new skills. This will be through field work, creating a written and photographic record of the site and using surveying equipment to record its position.
An oral history recorded from interviewing long term residents in the area will also be produced. The project will include a number of events to illustrate and promote the project and it’s outcomes, including larger community events – taking groups around to explain the history and character of the landscape; a site presentation and a presentation to local groups and residents. Four small interpretation panels will be erected, containing changing material from the project. The material gained from the project will feed into further work to develop a web site and education sessions at the site.
