The Architectural Heritage of Muncaster Castle
Location: Cumbria

Little is known about the historic development of the castle site, though the pele tower is reputed to date from the 13th Century. Initial investigations have been carried out by a group of 40 local volunteers working with a local archaeologist.

They are now keen to become involved in a detailed architectural survey of the castle with English Heritage, to elucidate the development of the castle through the ages. Before this can be carried out, the group needs to ascertain whether there is relevant material in the family papers and archives, which could inform this study. The project is thus to be divided into phases, the first of which is a development phase. This will involve an archivist training local volunteers so that they have the skills to investigate what relevant archive material exists, both at Muncaster and in Public Records Offices.

English Heritage will visit (In Kind) and assess the building and the material found during the research, to determine a modus operandi for the main project. The group then intends to take this forward as a Phase 2 LHI application, to involve local people in the architectural survey work and to make this available in a range of formats (including digital) to local people and visitors alike.

Local Community Involvement / Partnerships:
The volunteer research project became up and running witha training day on Sunday 17th October at Muncaster Castle. Of the 15 volunteers who applied to be involved in the project 11 were able to attend. The day was hosted by Mr. Peter Frost-Penningon, Mrs. Phyllida Gordon-Duff-Pennington and Miss Alexandra Chatburn. The volunteers were briefed on the nature, aims and progress of the project. They were given basic training on how to use archive respositories and a talk on doing historical research. They were also given th opportunity to handle and read a selection of documents from the Muncaster Castle archive. The volunteers were all enthusiastic and their research project is now ready to start.
