The Bessemer Converter
Location: Cumbria

The overall project aims to capture and present the knowledge, skills, experience, recollections and artefacts associated with the Bessemer Converter and its role within Workington's Iron and Steel production. A series of community activities and events will be held leading to the production of a booklet, CD-ROM, educational packs, Web site and ensemble artwork. However, the group is currently an informal one with no experience. They wish to do a Phase One Development Project during which they will receive training from a facilitator in skills needed to carry out a larger project.

This would involve providing mentoring and training, two workshops to develop the concepts for Phase Two, and training in use of on line resources. A display would be produced and two open days held to promote the ideas to the wider community and discuss concepts and approaches, encouraging in particular, the attendance and contributions of young people. Finally a delivery plan for Phase Two would be produced, using the material from Phase One to inform and finalise plans for the Phase Two project.
