Cumbrian folk tales preserved with LHI help
Location: Cumbria
December 2002
Local people from Allonby and the surrounding coastal area are being asked to come forward with any folk stories handed down from generation to generation.
Folk stories about 'sea wives', 'sea witches' or 'wise women' are being heard once again at reminiscence sessions. There is very little written evidence about these beautiful women with 'magical cloaks of sealskin' that allow them to 'pass between mortal and sea worlds'.
Curwen Heritage Theatre and its amateur actors will be performing a new play based on local people's stories about these legends with the help of a professional actor.
