The Cumbrian Story Project
Location: Cumbria

Phase 1 of this project aims to collect fragmentary Cumbrian folk stories, initially from Allonby village and the surrounding area. The stories will be turned into short plays to be performed by local volunteers. Performances will take place at Maryport and Allonby. Reminiscence sessions will be held afterwards with the aim of collecting new stories from local people.

These will then be turned into a new play and the cycle will begin again. The group hopes to employ a professional actor for a short time to take the lead role. This lead actor will then train and help rehearse the rest of the amateur actors.

The aim of the project is to preserve folk tales which are dying out and to present them to a new audience to stimulate interest in local story heritage. Leading on from this will be Phase 2. This will see the writing up and dramatisation of reminiscences and a new cycle of performances during 2003 in a different part of the area.
