The Cumbrian Story Project Phase One

The Cumbrian Story Project Phase 2
Location: Cumbria

The group wishes to build on Phase 1 of this project by collecting, disseminating and generating further interest in traditional local stories/dialect. The group proposes to research the stories/myths collected in Phase One in primary sources including archives and local history libraries and to use the material to publish a collection/anthology of complete stories based on this collected material, thus fleshing out the snippets of lost stories collected during Phase One.

These will be written and compiled by locally based volunteer authors and members of writing groups. The collections will be published as a booklet in ‘plain’ English, but using descriptive dialect words that are rapidly falling out of common usage, with a glossary. A CD will be recorded in dialect of a selection of the anthologies.

The group will host two sets of ‘gatherings’, consisting of three performances of two new plays alongside two standing exhibitions to launch the book and CD and a report. The plays will be based on material related to local mining and smuggling heritage, and will be written and performed in dialect by local amateur actors with supervision and training from a professional actor.
