The Greenside Project
Location: Cumbria

This project has been initiated by local people and is linked to the heritage of the Greenside lead mine which closed down in 1962.

The project has been developed from work carried out earlier by the local people to raise awareness of local heritage. This earlier work resulted in the formation of the Parish of Patterdale Millennium Group.

The project is recording and preserving the local industrial and cultural history of the area.

The project is producing an exhibition of the information that is being gathered. It will make privately owned material public for the first time. This will lead to a permanent display in the village hall.

The project is also doing conservation work on a Lodge of Mechanics silk banner which was found in the village hall and belongs to the parish.

The group has sought advice from the Museum of Labour History (which continues to provide advice on the conservation). Furthermore, a number of other groups are involved in the development of the project.
