The Kirkby Stephen Charter Fair - Phase 2 (Phase 2)
Location: Cumbria
The project concerns the staging of an event to mark the Kirkby Stephen Town Charter, reaffirmed in 1605 by James l. The charter granted the right to hold a fair on 27 October, 'the eve and the morrow' each year and a market each week.
The event is planned for the 24, 25 and 26 October 2003. The aim is to celebrate and raise the profile of this distinctive historic tradition throughout the Upper Eden Valley area and specifically within the town itself through involvement of the residents of all ages in the management, planning, research and delivery of a three day programme of historically authentic episodes.
Underpinning the event will be detailed research into the customs and traditions surrounding the St. Luke's Fair of 1605. Where possible, Manorial, Ecclesiastical, estate records, wills, inventories and court rolls will be used to identify and explain specific features of the Fair customs, with additional detail derived from secondary sources. This evidence will inform three publications, 1) a permanent interpretative display in the church grounds, 2) a 'newspaper' for delivery to all households in the town and 3) and interpretative leaflet.
Original researched incidents from the period and fair will be used to produce locally written script(s) for locally performed playlets in the manner of the pied poudre court.
The full event programme will include: a costumed procession and reading of the proclamation, street theatre, a market, music concert, arts and crafts exhibitions, banquet, demonstrations and workshops, dancing and sports, shop window displays. The project will also be featured on the town web site
