The Gill once powered and supplied water for three mills, a printworks, tannery and a dye works.
The project created a circular trail which explores Wigton's local heritage. The project has highlighted the Gill as the thread pulling together Wigton's history and heritage.
The project has provided "access for all" facilities along the route, which also includes two carved waymarkers and a carved seat. Three interpretation panels, picnic benches and perch seats have also been installed with access for the disabled. Two leaflets have been produced and an audio guide.
The trail was launched in July 2002 with over 60 people attending. An overall raising of awareness of local heritage and local pride has evolved through this project, with people from a variety of ages, backgrounds, social groups and skills all being involved. The Trail is now being handed over to Wigton Town Council and part of the circular route, which has been leased to the Town Council is in the process of being dedicated a 'PROW'.
