Wildlife enthusiasts in the North West will have the chance to learn more about one of Cumbria’s rarest mammals during the month of May.

The Cumbria Water Vole Project is running a series of training days to teach people how to search for this endearing creature. The water vole has become Britain’s fastest declining mammal and the population decrease is thought to be due to the combined effects of predation by mink and widespread habitat loss.

Funded by a £24,349 grant from the Local Heritage Initiative, trainee surveyors will learn about the telltale signs the voles leave behind – including their distinctive burrow holes and nibbled vegetation. The Cumbria Water Vole Project has been working since 2003 to help this species and carries out a range of conservation activities including education, habitat enhancement and survey work.
