Whitehaven Miners Memorial and Oral History
Location: Cumbria

The project will create a memorial to the people who worked in the coal mining industry in West Cumbria and raise awareness of the role that mining played in the history of Whitehaven.

Reminiscence workshops will be held for those who worked in the industry, initially working with the women who worked as 'screen lasses', the only women on the country who worked on the coal production line.

Using the information gathered from the from these workshops, a book, CD-ROM, exhibition, a play and a statue will be produced. Copies of the book and CD-ROM will be distributed free to local libraries, schools, colleges, museums and all organisations involved. School and youth groups will be involved in the development and production of the play. Finally, a statue will be created, with involvement from young people.
