Watchmaking in Prescot in Victorian Times
Location: Knowsley
The school wishes to make a film about the Watch Making industry in prescot. This was Prescot’s main industry in the Nineteenth Century. Children from the school will work with prescot museum and members of the Local History Society, to research information about Victorian times and gain film-making and editing skills.
The group then wishes to produce educational materials to show and explain the town’s heritage. They will focus on changes in Victorian times and why, by 1880, the watch making industry was undercut by cheap American and Swiss imports. This was also a time of transition – the development of football as a mass spectator sport and the beginnings of cheap transportation such as trams. The group will also examine how women were still forced to accept jobs in domestic service. The children will work with professional actors to produce reenactments as part of the film.
A professional archivist, and a web designer will assist with developing educational material and a supply teacher will supervise out of hours work. A leaflet and education pack will be produced and material put onto the school web site. The museum will host an exhibition.
