Abbey lakes heritage project
Location: Lancashire

Abbey Lakes comprises a lake, a small parking facility, a footpath which encircles the lake and a small area of meadow scrub. The group wishes to investigate the heritage of Abbey Lakes and to make that heritage more available to the public through interpretation, education and improved access to the site.

The project will comprise four elements, first, research into the creation of the site and it's development. The research will involve local archive information, canvassing the local community to provide documentation, maps, photographs and memories.

Secondly, the group will use this research to create on-site interpretation boards, an information leaflet, and a mobile exhibition to be used around the local community to promote the site, this project the local heritage.

Thirdly, the group will work with local schools to develop a programme of educational activities including class visits. The information and display subsequently produced will be developed into teaching aides which will be used to create a co-ordinated education pack to link to existing activities.

Finally the group will improve access to and around the site for all users, including path and parking improvements, lakeside boardwalk, seating and rest areas. All paths and facilities will be to the 'Access for All' standard as prescribed by the BT Countryside for All guidelines.
