Bringing the Leeds & Liverpool Canal to Life
Location: Lancashire

This is a community led project focusing on canal heritage in the Lancashire area, tailored to the needs of visually impaired and blind people. Heritage walks will be designed and tested by visually impaired people, before being recorded onto audio, and written out into leaflet form.

The guides will contain a combination of information on the history of the canal and guidance on what to touch, listen out for, and enjoy. The visitor experience will also include boat trips by canal longboat.

Local Rangers will be offered a training workshop enabling them to gain the skills necessary to develop their current walks into being appropriate for the needs of blind and visually impaired people, as well as training people in the art of guiding walks.

Three interpretation panels will be specifically designed with blind and visually impaired people in mind. Material produced will be posted on a number of websites, at a local museum and will be circulated to the readers of an audio newsletter circulated to the blind and partially sighted.
