Eccleston Apple Blossoms 2005 Phase 2
Location: Lancashire
This is a Phase 2 application to build on a successful initial project. Phase 1 involved researching the history of the local apple growing industry and remaining orchards, and produced a book. They also held a very successful event to launch the booklet.
They now wish to build on this by working in partnership with local people who were involved in setting up a Millennium Orchard to research and produce an A3 leaflet about the orchard and its local varieties. This will be distributed to local people.
Secondly, they wish to set up a new group (Eccleston Fruit Culture Group) and run a series of activities such as pruning demonstrations, trips to interesting orchards, researching traditions and providing professional advice on fruit culture, grafting etc.
Finally, the project will culminate in a celebration of English Apples as part of the National Calendar of English Apple Days. This event would see the leaflet launch and provide a range of accessible activities such as storytelling, recipes, longest peel competition etc. All designed to draw as many local people of all ages into looking at local apple growing traditions.
