LHI grant revives Chorley’s history
Location: Lancashire
December 2002
Local school children in Eccleston are dancing their way into history following an LHI grant of £18, 980.
Pupils from Eccleston County and St. Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Eccleston are currently learning the finer steps of clog dancing from nationally celebrated, local clog dancer, Alex Fisher.
The grant is funding a series of after school workshops within each school to teach them this lost Lancashire tradition. The finale on Saturday 8th March, 2003 will comprise a ‘Folk Workshop’ being run by Folkus and a Ceilidh Night where pupils will show off their newly acquired skills alongside experienced dancers and musicians.
The dancing is part of a three-year programme of heritage events and projects, co-coordinated by The Green Centre in Eccleston, to explore the social, natural and built history of the village. A new eight-mile heritage trail around Eccleston’s boundaries and a leaflet detailing the walk and some of Eccleston’s ‘heritage’ hot spots, as well as work to upgrade stiles and paths along the route, have all resulted from the LHI funding.
