Investigating Prehistoric Astley
Location: Lancashire

The project aims to investigate, record and explain the distinctive prehistoric archaeological heritage of the village of Astley, near Chorley and, in particular Bronze Age burial urn sites.

The project comprises professionally supervised geophysical and topographic surveys of areas of prehistoric activity, to be revealed by a programme of field walking, (all of which will involve volunteers), together with the conservation and scientific analysis of prehistoric finds from previous excavations in the village during the 1970s.

Trained volunteers will also record the oral testimony of local residents, capturing memories of the 1970s excavation, legends and folklore associated with the landscape.

The survey results, details of finds analysis and the oral testimony, will be interpreted in a variety of ways, including a web site, exhibition, talks and open days, printed publications, CD-ROM and DVD, a plaque and the formal project archive.

The printed outputs will be distributed free of charge to local residents and deposited within local libraries and the Lancashire County Records Office.
