The MLPS LHI Team

The light tower of the Bar Lightship

History of the Mersey Bar Light Vessels
Location: Liverpool

The Mersey Bar Light Vessel (MBLV) ‘Planet’ served as a guide to vessels entering and leaving the River Mersey from 1961 until her replacement with an automatic light in 1972.

The group is made up of 200 community members. The project seeks to research the features of the Mersey Light Vessels and in particular the ‘Planet’, together with the life of the crews and support staff. The group will research the history of the vessel, including visiting where it was built and trace people involved with the vessel.

After receiving training from the NW Sound Archive the members will interview those who were involved with the MBLV and advertise for local people to be interviewed.

The research will be produced in the form of DVD and CD ROM; an exhibition to be displayed on the ‘Planet’ to give visitors a ‘feel’ for what life was like on board a Merchant Navy Vessel; a ‘walk’ leaflet to guide people round the ‘Planet’; a general information leaflet and a more in depth leaflet; a re-enactment day and a celebration event to launch the exhibition.
