Mersey Lightvessel Preservation Society
Location: Liverpool

The Mersey Lightvessel Preservation Society aims to buy and restore the former Mersey Bar Light-vessel to her original specifications for the people of Merseyside. It is estimated that it will cost in the region of £375,000 to purchase and renovate "Planet".

Once the vessel is purchased it is the aim of the Society to create, within the "Planet", a unique museum of Merchant Navy life, showing how a ship at sea operated in the 1950s - 1960s, with radio communication represented from the 1930s to the present day.

It is important that the "Planet" is preserved as an historic ship. She was the last manned light-vessel in UK waters and her original home was in Merseyside, a part of Britain which has long been associated with the Merchant Navy and provided a large proportion of its crews.

An LHI grant has been awarded:
"To research life on the the Mersey Bar Light Vessel, through interviewing
ex-crew and staff members and those who remember it and preserving the memory of the manned light vessels. This will be achieved, by recording the memories of local people; creating and holding an exhibition and re-enactment aboard the "planet", with the results of the research and memorabilia; producing a DVD, CDROM to create a permanent
and easily distributed record of life on the vessel."
