Due to impending Housing Market Regeneration, a whole area of Orrell in Bootle, Merseyside will be demolished in the near future. It was felt by a number of residents that some form of record should be made of the Klondyke estate, its' builder, residents and tenants, together with their memories and anecdotes. Also the surrounding factories and retail businesses (many of which are now defunct), should be surveyed and a book issued depicting this history. The Klondyke residents Association has undertaken this challenging project, and the following i8s a general programme of the work involved:-
Following the jubilation of receiving the funding, a second account was opened to cope with the financial aspects of the project. During the last few months many digital photographs have been taken of buildings and housing on this Victorian Klondyke estate. The photographs are being used to produce CAD drawings of the buildings which will, as far as possible, will appear as they were 100 years ago. Short histories of the businesses will be noted and residents who worked in those businesses will be interviewed.
Our partners consist of various groups many of whom are local, including St. George of England High School Local History Studies Group, Y-Kids Church Group, North West Sound Archive, Miss Lalla McDermott, Orrell & Bootle Local History Group, Local Historian Peter Woolley, Bootle Expressions, Crosby Library Local Studies Unit, and Sefton CVS Department.
We are attempting to locate early photographs, and memories from sources such as residents and tenants, Record Offices and Libraries, and other organisations that may have information and data on our area. The drawings together with maps of the area will be illustrated in the proposed book, with anecdotes and memories from elderly residents.
Other photographs with related Audio Interviews will be recorded onto DVD's so that the place of residence, workplace or local shop will be shown with interviews of the people who lived and worked there. Modern day interviews carried out by the childrens groups with present day photographs will highlight the differences that have occurred over the last century.
The book together with the DVD will form an archive of the Klondyke which will be sold at an affordable price, and all profits will be ploughed back into the project to create more copies as required. Copies of the project material will be deposited in local Libraries, Record Offices, North West Sound Archive and National Archives. An initial run of 500 copies was envisaged but early market research indicates that this may have to be doubled.
Towards the end of, and following on from the project, exhibitions will be held to illustrate the work of the partners in the project. These will be held in local schools, church halls, libraries and, hopefully in a local shopping centre. With an end date of December 2007, there is a huge amount of work to be accomplished, and our partners will be providing time and effort to ensure that the Klondyke Kaleidoscope project runs smoothly.
